 Con 60 años, Ry Cooder parece haber recuperado el brío de la canción-protesta popular. No es optimista respecto al futuro, pero eso no lo priva de desenfundar el arma de la denuncia.

‘My name is Buddy’ es un disco, un libro de cuentos ilustrado y casi un panfleto político. El nuevo trabajo de Ry Cooder combina una historia infantil con duras críticas a la política conservadora y un homenaje a las antiguas canciones del folk norteamericano, en el que participan veteranos como Mike y Pete Seeger, el pianista Van Dyke Parks, el gaitero de los Chieftains Paddy Moloney y el acordeonista Flaco Jiménez. En realidad, es una especie de vuelta a los orígenes, porque su primer álbum, en 1970, incluía temas de los legendarios Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly o Blind Willie Johnson.

 

‘My name is Buddy’ combina textos y música, relatos y canciones. ¿Cómo decidió crear todo el conjunto?

 

Una vez que tuve las canciones y las grabé, se me ocurrió que la gente podría hacerse una idea más adecuada de lo que representaban si les añadía algo. En este tipo de música popular y populista se suele hablar de las dificultades de la vida de los pobres y los trabajadores, lo que pasa es que las canciones suelen ser más bien alegres. No quería que se quedaran sólo con eso, por ello imaginé una serie de escenas en forma de un cuento que permitiera al público visualizar la historia. Luego se añadieron los dibujos.

 

Los personajes principales son evidentemente de izquierdas. El gato Buddy Red Cat, Lefty Mouse (el ratón zurdo) y un sapo ciego, el reverendo Tom Toad, trasunto de un hombre pobre y negro. Son rebeldes, irónicos, tiernos y generosos. ¿Qué es lo que ha querido retratar?

 

En las canciones de la clase trabajadora, los blues y ese tipo de música, se habla siempre de gente indefensa ante los poderosos, su única esperanza es siempre la solidaridad. Como cita Lefty: ‘We are many, they are few’. Ese era el grito de los primeros socialistas. El tema central del disco es que la unidad da la fortaleza. Lefty, el ratón, es un ser frágil, es como uno de esos organizadores sindicales, pobres, perseguidos, encarcelados y hasta asesinados. Seres indefensos, en general, que sentían tener una misión y unas ideas que sostener. Podían hacer que sucedan cosas y, de hecho, lo hicieron. Los sindicatos trajeron el mundo moderno porque la solidaridad genera poder aunque, por supuesto, hay otros que quieren parar ese tipo de poder. En Estados Unidos lograron destruir los movimientos sindicales y deshacerse de quienes lo apoyaban despidiéndolos y enviándolos a México o a China. Simplemente desenchufaron al trabajador y le quitaron todo el poder. Y eso es algo que el Partido Republicano se propuso hacer y nunca ha dejado de practicar.

 

La historia de aquellos años difíciles quizá tenga resonancias en el momento actual.

Las cosas no han cambiado mucho. Ahora tenemos los mismos problemas de antes, e incluso algunos peores. Todo cambia y todo sigue igual.

 

En lo musical, este no es un trabajo aislado. Parte de una vieja tradición de la música popular americana, de canción protesta. En su primer álbum ya recurrió a estos autores. ¿Por qué los ha recuperado en este momento?

 

Cuando era muy joven me encantaban estas canciones. Pero las casas de discos me aconsejaban cambiar de registro. ‘Cómprate unos pantalones de cuero y venderás más discos’, me decían. No entendían nada. Pero yo me empeñé, lo hice y no funcionó muy bien. Ahora tengo 60 años, hago lo que me apetece y nadie me pregunta por qué.

 

El primer dibujo del libreto del CD es del libro ‘El capital’, de Karl Marx. ¿Sigue suelto el fantasma del anticomunismo?

 

El anticomunismo es absurdo. Pero todo el problema empieza con la enseñanza, en la escuela no te enseñan a pensar. La enseñanza pública en Estados Unidos ha creado una población dócil adecuada a sus planes. Lo que digo es que es necesario empezar a leer la verdad, a darte cuenta de lo que sucede en realidad. Al principio pensé que este sería un buen libro infantil porque así los niños se preguntarían por qué arrestan a Buddy, qué es una huelga, cómo actúan los poderosos, etcétera. Lo malo es que sus padres tampoco tienen ni idea. Lo terrible es que no estamos preparados para actuar como ciudadanos.

 

¿Ha planteado este álbum como una llamada para que despierten quienes no se hayan dado cuenta de la situación?

 

Desde luego. Pero creo que ya es demasiado tarde, aunque Buddy al final diga que debe haber algún lugar luminoso. Quizá una sociedad totalmente distinta, un sistema económico diferente, algo mejor en algún lugar. Buddy es un optimista. Yo no lo soy. He visto cómo se derrumbaba toda la noción de la sociedad norteamericana que teníamos, la he visto convertirse en un gran centro comercial donde lo único que vale son las tarjetas de crédito.

 

Buddy dice al principio que cuando cantas adquieres fuerza y poder. Usted es músico y utiliza ese arma.

 

Pete Seeger solía decir que si reúnes a un grupo de personas de distinta procedencia, edad e ideas, y las haces cantar juntas, todas esas diferencias desaparecen de inmediato. Lo he visto hacerlo y es cierto. La música tiene ese poder. J. Edgar Hoover lo sabía y por eso persiguió a los músicos.

 

No hace mucho entró el FBI a casa de una niña que había puesto en internet un inocente montaje de Bush con un hacha. Con las cosas que usted dice, ¿no ha tenido problemas en su país?

 

No tenemos censura, de momento. Los republicanos van con la Constitución en la mano aunque no les guste, porque saben que ese documento es la base de nuestra sociedad. Yo, o cualquiera, todavía puedo participar en una manifestación, cantar una canción o escribir una carta, pero no me sorprendería que volvamos pronto a una época como la del macartismo y la caza de brujas. El futuro no pinta bien.

 

En este álbum recobra el espíritu de las viejas canciones del folk. Las más comprometidas socialmente. ¿Qué artista prefiere en ese campo?

 

Las antiguas melodías y ritmos de la música vernacular americana me han ayudado a contar las historias de hoy. Es tiempo de formar parte de algo. Me gusta esa música antigua, pero no voy a cantar una y otra vez esas canciones. Ahora tenemos cosas nuevas que decir, aunque el estilo es más o menos el mismo.
