El Condado De La Salsa y Jazz Latino Review/Hit Parade April 2022

Who could have ever thought that by the end of the 1st quarter of the year we’d have so many new songs and CD’s available to us from various genres like Latin Jazz, Salsa Dura, Salsa Romantica, Boleros and more that have already been released in 2022. There are reports of even more recordings soon to be released in various markets. It has been incredible at the level of good music versus bad music that has been recorded but we try to single out the good material for you the fans and collectors. Look for these new recordings and re-issues to continue to be released in 2022 from all parts of the world.

One classic CD that has been just re-issued with a bonus live track, “Rendevous”, is Luisito Quintero’s “3rd Element” with the now super hits “Chacho”, “Rumba En Agustin”, “City View”, “Metheny”, “Luisito’s Mambo”, “Nequin”, “When There Were Four” and the Venezuelan folkloric “Los Gaiteros”. “3rd Element” explores the Afro-Venezuelan and Afro-Cuban like only this veteran percussionist can and he plays all the main percussions: conga, bongo, drums but excels on timbales where I first heard him play in the 80’s with the Oscar D’ Leon band.

Some of the guests on this superb Latin Jazz percussive driven Cd include his dad legendary Luis Quintero Sr on timbales, his uncle Carlos ‘Nene’ Quintero on conga, his cousin Roberto Quintero on conga, Spanish Harlem Orchestra bandmates Oscar Hernandez & Doug Beavers plus an all-star array of veterans and young stallions like Ricky Gonzalez, Noah Bless, Reynaldo Jorge, Jose Villamar, Eliel Rivera, Axel Tosca, Julio ‘Julito’ Antillano, Alfredo Naranjo and Maximo Rodriguez.

Color vinyl has become a huge for collector’s and some go for high $ while others are worth it despite the cost ($25 to $45 average). Some of my favorites have been Azabache (since the CD became rare a decade ago), Boricua Legends, many in Fania (that has been using some rare awesome colors) like Celia Cruz & Willie Colon, Josean Rivera, Poncho Sanchez, Victor Rendon Bronx Conexion Latin Jazz Big Band, Wito Rodriguez, Don Perignon y La Puertoriqueña, Steve Guasch y su Orquesta Nueva Era, Joshuah De Jesus & Buena Vibra Sextet, Dorance Lorza & Sexteto Café, Doug Beavers, Edwin Perez, and Mario Ortiz Jr.

Fania has not only announced that a new division called Craft Latino that includes the labels TH (Top Hits), that I ran in NY in the 80’s, Musart from Mexico with hundreds of folkloric releases, Panart from Cuba that is a huge catalog with all the Fajardo y sus Estrellas series, West Side Latino (Ray Barretto, Tito Rodriguez, La Lupe plus) and its vintage recordings from the 60’s & 70’s that in 2010 was purchased by Miami’s Codigo Music that also had Fania, and Kubaney that was a merengue powerhouse with a huge Johnny Ventura catalog that includes many of his rare Salsa LP’s but most importantly was the announcement of new LP’s in 2022.

The have slated to release four Willie Colon & Hector Lavoe LP’s: “El Juicio” (50th), “Crime Pays”, “Asalto Navideño” and “Lo Mato… Si No Compre Este LP”, Joe Bataan’s “Gypsy Woman”, Fania All Stars (50th) “Live at The Cheetah 1 & 2”, Tito Puente’s (50th) “Para Los Rumberos”, Ismael Rivera y sus Cachimbos (50th) “Eso Fue Lo Que Trajo El Barco” and Ray Barretto’s (50th) “Que Viva La Musica”.
