South-of-the-border rhythms captivated songwriters from Irving Berlin to
Cole Porter and beyond. Lucie Arnaz celebrates the "Latin invasion" of
the '30s, '40s and '50s through her father's original big band
arrangements. They've been stored in the Library of Congress and now she
brings them to the 92nd Street Y stage.

				The West Gate Lounge Presents:

				CHICO ALVAREZ

				y MAFIMBA

Ernesto "Chico" Alvarez Peraza is a native New Yorker
specializing in Cuban dance music. Chico was born in Brooklyn
and grew up in Cuba. He has been performing as a singer
throughout the New York City tri-state area for the last four
decades. He currently performs with his ten piece conjunto "Mafímba"
and can also be heard hosting New World Gallery, a weekly music
show which airs on Sunday afternoons at WBAI Pacifica Radio
(99.5 FM). He is a staff writer for Latin Beat magazine and his
written works can also be found online, via latinjazznet.com.
Currently he lives in northern New Jersey. Throughout the years,
Mr. Alvarez has been the recipient of many awards, among them a
special recognition from the National Federation of Community
Broadcasters. During his twenty two years on the air, he has
interviewed a broad range of artists, from Andres Segovia, Tony
Bennett, Ben E. King, Dizzy Gillespie to Tito Puente, Cachao
Lopez, Celia Cruz and Chucho Valdés.

“Chico Alvarez is a time-traveler. His voice rises as if from
old wax records. His diction and intonation have the sweet
quality of old Cuban soneros. On the other hand, the band is
slammin' very much in the here and now.”

It’s the perfect way to start 2010!

		THE MULTI-GRAMMY
NOMINATED and JAZZ JOURNALISTS AWARD WINNING

		BOBBY SANABRIA BIG BAND

		opens at the

		FB LOUNGE 172 E. 106th  Street (between
		Lexington & 3rd Avenue)

		(212) 348-3929

		Beginning January 13th (and
		every Wednesday)

		Shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm

$20, $15 w/ student ID or WBGO FM Jazz 88 membership card

Continuing the FB Lounge’s NEW jazz format, Sundays through
Wednesdays, bringing the finest in world class jazz entertainment to
East Harlem, Harlem-based jazz club entrepreneur and former Jazz
Standard manager, Mark Payne, in association with the owners of FB
Lounge, proudly announce a new “residency” every Wednesday night
starting January 13th, with a mind blowing evening of big band jazz,
Cuban mambo, and beyond with the multi-Grammy nominated Bobby Sanabria
Big Band. Led by award winning drummer, percussionist, composer,
arranger, Bobby Sanabria, this 19 piece orchestra has re-defined the art
of the big band with its incredible “expansionist theory” approach.

“…(Mr. Sanabria) expands the possibilities, moving the sound of
bands like that of (Puente, Machito), with all the heft and intricacy
and clave-based dance rhythm, into the harmonically oriented
sophistication of current New York jazz players. It’s New York up and
down, and back and forth across the last century, from the street to the
		mambo palaces to the conservatories.”

		- Ben Ratliff, The NY Times

Mambo, rumba, merengue, bomba, samba, cha-cha-cha, they all have
their own beats, and when they are combined by the Bobby Sanabria Big
Band with jazz, rock, R&B, funk, world music and the blues, the results
are guaranteed to be exciting and mind-blowing.

		- Brad Walseth – concertlivewire.com

The orchestra will be performing music
from its two Grammy nominated CD’s, “Live & In Clave!” and the recent
“Big Band Urban Folktales” as well as new material from its ever
expanding repertoire that brings the big band tradition into the 21st
century and beyond. This event signals the opening of a weekly residency
by Bobby and other world renowned jazz performers at the FB Lounge. WBGO
FM Jazz 88 members and students with I.D. are offered admission at a
		discounted rate to all performances.

"Bobby Sanabria is equally adept at the swinging big band sounds of
drummers Buddy Rich and Louis Bellson along with another boyhood hero,
fusion pioneer Billy Cobham and timbale titan Tito Puente."

		- Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times
